The stone at the entrance to St Peters Close was one of a pair of stones, one either side of the entrance, they were placed there to stop the hubs of carts hitting the brickwork of walls and buildings and judging by the wear on this particular stone it certainly proved its worth as the hubs of hundreds of carts have worn it into the shape that we see today.
